Talking vs. writing

Calling is great. You get your problem solved instantly. You have no worries. Fast. Easy. Cheap. But how about the person you are talking to?

When she is doing something and gets interrupted, her way of talking to you won’t be the same as if she expects the call. It is much better if your provider, client, investor, potential client, or colleague knows in advance the purpose of your call. They win. You win.

In Spain, people tend to prefer talking and maybe not answering emails. But emails or messenger might be a better way to communicate. Use only phone calls when it is really a very urgent matter. Most of the problems you have can wait for a while. Really. The world goes on and I’m sure you have tons of things to do.

Conciseness

When people are asked about short answers, most of them give long speeches. When they are requested to do a 1-minute elevator pitch, they complain about not being able to say everything about their company. When they have 10 minutes, they tend to spend as much as the moderator allows them to. They are awful speakers. Maybe bad leaders.

Communication implies that your message reaches clearly your target audience. This means that you need to explain the key ideas briefly, to the point, not the full version. No one is interested in the whole story from the beginning, you need to attract their attention, and then, they will give you more time if they want. Not if you decide. So go step by step.

I love the concept from the book Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath: use Simple, Unexpected, Concrete, Credible, Emotional Stories.
