Many people spend time on what they think are opportunities, but in fact they are not. I did it even myself when I started selling mobile machine translation solutions to handset manufactorers and mobile operators. The so-called managers wanted always to meet us, but there were clear red lights, they never made key decisions.

If you see red lights, or fyou feel them, go and find another potential client. Even when you see yellow lights, such as the key person not going to your meeting, you have two options, either you go faster, but you might crash, or you brake a bit and rethink the whole story.

If you can turn on the green light before you run out of gas, go ahead, otherwise, there might be better opportunities to spend your time on.

Know yourself

What is your personal SWOT analysis? Have you thought about it? Your Strengths and Weaknesses define what you can do well and what you are not good at. And this should be somehow aligned with what you do, and the Opportunities and Threats out there. Avoid the threats, consider the risks, and exploit all the opportunites that surround you. The world as a whole is a big opportunity. Think big. But start small.

Do something

Do something about what you’d always wanted to do. Don’t wait more time. Otherwise it will be too late.

In your company, you see lots of opportunities coming. But if  the ONE comes close enough to you, go and catch it. Go for it. No doubts. Even if it changes your plans, or if you feel scary about embracing it. If you don’t try, you’ll never know how good it was.

So diversify if you are big enough – or pivot if you are just starting.

Have a nice weekend!
